Community HealthCorps is an AmeriCorps program based in a community health center where members dedicate a year of national service to improving health care access for underserved populations. Community HealthCorps members at Sixteenth Street Community Health Center serve as health educators in diabetes, WIC, womens health and asthma; as outreach workers in lead poisoning prevention and HIV; as patient advocates in the medication assistance program; as interpreters; as volunteer coordinators; and as program leaders for Reach Out and Read. Members begin their program year in September and complete their service the following August. Some members serve in part-time or short-term roles. Members receive a living stipend and health insurance while serving; they are also eligible for child care assistance. Upon successful completion of the program requirements, members receive an Education Award to use toward school expenses or student loan payments. Members also receive various trainings throughout the year, gain experience in the health and social services fields, participate in service projects and community events, and have the opportunity to provide unique and rewarding service to the SSCHC community. More information on Community HealthCorps can be found at www.communityhealthcorps.org For general AmeriCorps information or to apply, visit www.americorps.gov and download an application or complete it electronically. Members are selected on a rolling basis and applications will be considered until all positions are filled.
